Interesting new Amazon Ads.....on packages!

As an Amazon Prime user I find myself ordering a couple of things a week from Amazon and when today's shipments arrived (one in an envelope shipper and one a box), I was initially confused because I didn't order Call of Duty Black Ops II (yet)! Instead of my usual Amazon smiles, my packages had ads for hot new videogames: (CODII and CreedIII):

These appear to be Amazon 'house' ads and the COD ad has a short URL (www.amazon.com/blackops2) that goes straight to the Amazon pre-order page.  The ads did get me thinking - how many packages are going out a day?  How many people see the packages?  that's a pretty big reach.  Bigger than a billboard, bigger than a banner ad, bigger than a TV ad?

Here's an AdAge article that includes an interview with Amazon about the overall Ad topic that got me thinking about this.  Could package advertising be an entirely new leg of opportunity for Amazon?

Scot Wingo, CEO of ChannelAdvisor, wrote this article.

P.S. One of these packages was FBA....
