I am attending the Amazon Seller Conference in Seattle and Day 2 is solely focused on updates by Amazon management to the approx. 150-200 sellers present. Yesterday was mostly operations-type of presentations on marketing, taxes, logistics to help 3P Amazon sellers with running their businesses.
First up, Sebastian Gunningham, SVP of Amazon Services and chief over everything third-party selling, is focusing on the buying side of Amazon as “we’re going to see seller-centric presentations throughout the day”. Read more
Amazon Seller Conference

Two weeks ago I attended eBay Live! in Chicago, eBay’s annual seller conference with a focus on education and third-party solutions that can help online retailers sell more profitably. eBay is fortunately retooling this annual eBay fest with attendance noticeably down this year (6,000?) and rumor has it that it may offer more targeted events similar to its annual e-Commerce Forum in January that is focused on the top sellers in each of the main categories (great format and attendance).
Since more and more eBay sellers are expanding to Amazon, I was asked several times at eBay Live! if Amazon is offering a seller conference, and if it could help grow sales on this channel?
Is Amazon a more profitable channel then eBay?

Just like the eternal epic struggle of “boxers vs. briefs”, the comparisons between eBay and Amazon will never cease among online retailers. At least as long as both command a significant share of traffic and online sales in the U.S..
To fuel the fire, I am focusing for this week’s e-commerce celebrity death match between eBay and Amazon on SKU profitability with two contrarian views from third-party merchants.
The Amazon Flywheel (ChannelAdvisor Catalyst - Part III)

I am wrapping up my how-much-more-could-you-possibly-be-writing commentary on our Catalyst conference in Pinehurst with Amazon SVP Sebastian Gunningham’s overview of Amazon’s growth model. While not intentional, it does fit nicely with Amazon’s recent earnings announcement of another great quarter of “we’re grabbing more e-commerce market share” 31% growth in the US.
Amazon at ChannelAdvisor Catalyst (Part II)

As promised but long delayed, here’s the second part of my ChannelAdvisor Catalyst US thoughts and observations.
Amazon Enterprise
- Before WebStore there was Amazon’s enterprise platform, essentially managing a retailer’s e-commerce business and the foundation on which WebStore was built. Not all that well known since this is really only an option for a very small number of large online retailers.
- Great examples are Marks & Spencer and Target.com.
Twittering on Amazon

Okay, so it’s been almost a week since my last post. Have been out (at the beach) but am working on the follow-up posts to our Catalyst conference with more Amazon insights, but wanted to call out two things in the meantime:
- I have started twittering on Amazon at www.twitter.com/amazonwire. The aim here is to share real-time updates and information on anything Amazon.com.
- Next week is ChannelAdvisor’s Catalyst conference in the UK with staff from Amazon’s UK team present. If you have questions or concerns about selling on Amazon, this is your time to engage them. I will also attend and will share any noteworthy information here.

Amazon at ChannelAdvisor Catalyst (Part I)

This past week we held our annual ChannelAdvisor Catalyst conference in Pinehurst, North Carolina, with 500 online retailers, solution providers and the leading e-commerce players (eBay, Amazon, Google, Overstock, Facebook, etc.). Amazon SVP Sebastian Gunningham, responsible for all third-party business worldwide, brought his team to Pinehurst and delivered a keynote address Thursday morning on Amazon’s products and strategy (not available online but if we do share it you’ll read it here first …).
I am going to summarize my key take-aways from his presentation, discussions with Amazonites as well as thoughts and insights from attendees over multiple posts simply because it otherwise would turn into a War & Peace post (and it’s already late). If you’re interested in other non-Amazon thoughts / lessons from the conference I will post a review on the main ChannelAdvisor blog over the next few days. Read more
Amazon speaks at IMA conference

I attended over the last three days the IMA (Internet Merchants Association) conference in Las Vegas, a great opportunity to speak with small to mid-sized merchants about online retailing challenges (in particular around eBay and Amazon) and better understand where they are going (comparison shopping, international, social networking, etc.). Amazon’s Matt Williams presented at this event and Ina at AuctionBytes has a brief summary that is worth scanning. Notable is that Amazon includes a catalog insert in every FBA box.

Here’s a great opportunity to rub shoulders with Amazon’s management team: SVP Sebastian Gunningham, head of Amazon 3P (third-party) seller program, will be attending ChannelAdvisor Catalyst US in Pinehurst, North Carolina, April 1st through the 3rd. He is going to bring some team members with him to talk about the tremendous opportunity on Amazon for online retailers.
If you’re not yet selling on Amazon but are considering it or if you would like to better understand best practices for selling on this channel (or may have challenges) this is a tremendous chance to get your questions answered (or issues heard) from the team that sets the strategies and policies on Amazon.com for 3P sellers.
