Amazon.co.uk launches Amazon Prime

Very good news for Amazon-crazy UK shoppers: Amazon UK today launched the Amazon Prime program with an announcement from Jeff Bezos himself on the home page. Introduced in the US in February of 2005, Amazon Prime offers Amazon customers fast shipping for a flat monthly fee for qualifying products.
£49 / year gets you “unlimited Free One-Day Delivery on millions of eligible items sold by Amazon.co.uk.” plus a discounted rate of £7.49 for same-day evening delivery window in London and Birmingham (serviced from the Stafford Amazon Fulfillment Center, I assume).
Just like in the US and in Japan (as of June ‘07), only products sold directly by Amazon or third-party sellers participating in the Fulfillment By Amazon program are eligible (here’s the fine print). And while very successful in the spacious United States, it remains to be seen how many British shoppers are going to pay £49 for free next-day shipping when it should not take longer then two days to get your prized possession using Super Saver Delivery.
How’s it going to look? Here’s a fresh example of a Canon PowerShot digital camera sourced by Amazon and eligible for Amazon Prime. If you don’t have one yet, quick — order it and tell me how fast it arrived on your doorstep!
