Amazon.com to sell wine?

Mar 6th, 2008 | By Max Leisten | Category: Amazon Categories, Amazon Features

Rumors have sprung up that Amazon will begin selling wine in the US. Via Computerworld comes a new job posting on Amazon’s site for a “senior wine buyer”:

“[...] the senior buyer must have broad experience in the wine industry and will be responsible for the “acquisition of massive new product selection” and “will work to build out our entirely new selection from the ground up.”

Of course this is not a huge surprise. Amazon’s captive and affluent consumers are a pretty ripe audience for online wine shopping now that Wine.com has proven this market. And Gourmet Food is today a restricted category so I anticipate that Amazon will continue to selectively admit new sellers into this category although the ad hints that direct sourcing will be the initial focus. I wonder if a 3P seller could open a wine Webstore?
