Amazon revenue grows a gazillion percent
Oct 23rd, 2007 | By Max Leisten | Category: Amazon NewsOkay, rounded down it comes to about 41% revenue growth YOY to $3.26 billion but it’s still a stunning number and something the eBay management team should be very jealous of (considering a lot of eBay sellers expanding to Amazon are fueling this 41% jump). There is some concern about operating margins (causing somewhat of a sell-off from the amazing appreciation over the last months) but third-party sellers already on this channel should be dancing.
Particularly exciting are
- the consumer electronics category grew 54% YOY (51% FX adjusted) and now represents 35% of North American revenues, up from 33%. New products (in particular anything from Apple and HP) as well as initiatives like the new High-Def 101 should accelerate this even further in future quarters
- Amazon now has over 250,000 registered third-party developers, up from 25,000, driven largely by their new payment system (FPS). Solution providers developing on top of an open platform accelerate growth (as recently demonstrated impressively by Facebook). For comparison there may be as many as 4,000 third-pary developers building apps on top of Facebook, 50,000 on eBay and 260,000+ for PayPal.
- Active customer accounts exceeded 72 million, up 17% year over year. Unofficially numbers quoted from Amazon have this around 78 million by now.
What else stood out?
- North America segment sales were $1.79 billion, up 42% from third quarter 2006
- International segment sales were $1.47 billion, up 40% from third quarter 2006
- Worldwide Media grew 36% to $2.09 billion in third quarter 2007

[...] Amazon’s blow-out quarter is partially a result of more merchants then ever selling on the fastest-growing marketplace West of the Mississippi. That is at best mixed news if you are already on Amazon.com as competition for the coveted Buy Box (the Amazon.com main Product Detail page) is growing. In fact, chances are high that most of your products are flying merchandising coach class already (the “New & Used” product listing page) alongside dozens of competitors. The only consolation of course is that Amazon grew their active customer base by 17% to 72 million in Q3 2007 so there are more shoppers to go around for everyone. [...]
